Fact or fiction?

Increasing your water temp increases the speed of your cycle? Just wondering if a LFS knows what they're talking about.

I read that online.. I tried it. Had my water at 86 during the cycle. I have no clue if it actually speed it up or not. It took about 3 weeks to see the fall and rise of the ammonia and nitrites, I didn't put fish in it right away though cause I am having horrible algae issues.

You might have answered my next question with the algae. Do you think the algae problem is directly related to the higher water temp?

Yes, too both but I believe the amount of the benefit would not be worth the trouble.

Would you be referring to algae trouble? If you cycled at a higher temp with no light would algae still be a problem?

The temp has an effect but controlling the temp will not fix an algae issue.
Algae is a healthy part of a saltwater tank and you can't rid the tank of all algae. You want to manage the algae so that you are happy with the tank. You can do that by growing algae you like in the tank or large refuge. Keep fish that eat algae you don't like and control wastes. Some algae will grow in the same conditions you try to provide for corals in that case you just manage it till you decide it must be dealt with. In a reef the corals can out compete the algae but not in the beginning when you have very few. QT new additions so you can clean all unwanted algae before it is add to the DT. There are some chems that can be use that work over a long time frame like 10-12 weeks and some that you can clean algae off by dip treatment. Over all time an knowledge will allow your tank to be satisfying.

Well maybe there is my answer to my algae issues lol. I really didn't know what did or did not cause it. I can say I have never experienced it so bad in the 3 saltwater tanks I had set up before as this one. Im finally getting it under control though.
