I did a water change last night and turned all my equipment on and went to bed. Upon a quick glance, everything seemed to be working fine. This was at 8:00 PM
When I woke up this morning at 5:30 AM I glaced at my tank to notice that all my fish were lifeless.
Paniced, I ran to my tank to notice the pump in the sump for the return had not started up (Mag 7). I check the power and everything was ok, I shaked the pump and it started again.
Upon removing the dead bodies I notices the eel was alive and well and my picasso trigger was holding on for dear life, i doubt he'll make it.
Now I sit at work, in shock and numb, thoughts of my fish flashing through my head. No doubt they died of Suffication, due to the pump not bringing fresh water.
I lost my Pork Puffer, DF Puffer, Voilatan Lion, Yellow Tang, Hippo Tang, and Halequin Tusk. Probably my picasso too.
I have had multiple fish losses before in my aquaria "career" but my fish had such character and charm. It was truly a huge loss for me. They will always be remembered fondly in my heart, they were always a source of happiness and light. Upon their passing today, i'm very sad and depressed.
Has anyone else had such bad crashes with their tank. Did this cause them to leave the hobby? How did the get back in the "saddle".
Sorry for the long post, I just had to vent. Thanks!

OMG i am sooo sorry for your loss. However i do not believe that 10 hours without the main pump would kill your fish. I have had power outs for days at a time and suffered no loss. Were your power heads on?

I have never lost all my fish before but came home one afternoon to find the a/c broken and tank temp. well over 90 degrees. Lost a couple of fish and several corals.

I have had a crash in the past that left me heartbroken as well. A sick fish, and an ill-timed vacation left me totally fishless. I didnt have as many as you did, but the ones I had I was attached to. I did feel so disgusted and it made me wonder if all this trouble and expense was worth it. But the fact is, we love this hobby. We keep working at making things better and not repeating mistakes. Like Greatful Reefer said, I also thought that a few hours of no filtration was not such a severe thing as to kill all the fish. I would check everything else as well. (Stray voltage? Something else out of whack?) So, don't quit. Take a breath. Start at the beginning and have the best tank ever

My dad lost an entire tank when I was little... He had a voliton, a snowflake, a blue tang, a yellow tang, a puffer of some sort, and i beleive a wrasse or two. Not positive i got all the fish or all those fish were in there - I dont' remember too well. He came home after grabbing me from the baby sitters and the heater had broken. The water temperature was hot to touch he said. Needless to say - the entire tank was gone.
After that he folded up the hobby - my mom drew the line. So here I am scavenging stuff from the basement and picking it back up. He's helping me get into the hobby - the fish addict is still in him :D . (He offered to over double my 500$ to get a nice tank)

There were no powerheads and the tank was stocked to capacity, I'm sure this hastened the process.
I just want to thank everyone for their support. It has really helped me more than you know. I'm very fortunate to be a part of this community.
Thank You :)

I had multiple fish die a few months ago, and I beleive it was a Ph drop that caused it. I dont beleive I had sufficient gas exchange, and the Ph dropped too low. My humu did survive, and is still alive. Sorry for the loss.

I had the same situation happen to me last year during this time. The culprit was using tap water from the faucet. Where I live, the tap water changes and during the initial period, there is a lot of metal in the water. After I did a water change with the metallic water, all of my fish died besides my two eels.
I have a keen feeling that this could be similar to my situation.
Sorry though.

Thanks all for your thoughts and support.
As for metallics or bad tap water, that's out of the question, I use a RO/DI Unit and monitor the TDS closely.
