"False Percs"

I just spent a few minutes on the forum and saw the term "false percs' at least three times. THEY ARE OCELLARIS CLOWNS!! Every time I see this, its the visual equivalent of a fingernail on a blackboard. (Am I the only one?) Can't we, starting with our host- SWF. com, start calling this little fish by its proper name? I think I'll start calling Emperor Angels "False Korans" and Zebra Lions as "False Fuzzies". Maybe this shouldn't bug me so much...but I need something to whine about.

Hahaha and my girlfriend thought that I was the only one with this problem! It's the same with me, I don't like it when they're called false percs or at some LFS "nemos". I'm totally with you, it bothers me as much

Thank god someone said this! I wanted to but I have only been a member for a few months and I didn't want to look like a jerk! I do often correct people when i see they have called them False Percs.
Also I would like to add that a guy in a LFS near me said they were there own species and they were not Ocellaris Clowns... I nodded and agreed so not to cause an argument!

Argue with him! A LFS should be a wealth of info for us; sadly ,it isn't any more. I remember when it was.
"False Perks" are what a guy gets when he marries a gal with implants. (Whoops! It slipped.)

There are many different species of clownfish.
Clown fish are in the same family as damselfish Pomacentridae.
Amphiprion ocellaris
Amphiprion percula

Amphiprion clarkii

Amphiprion allardi

and many more species are available in the hobby.

You're not alone!
I have actually yelled at LFSs for this. Now when I see them labeled incorrectly I either scratch the marker off the tank or peel off the label. My favorite is one store around here sells them as "True ORA False Percula Clownfish" and calls saddlebacks black and white percs.

The best is the different answers you get when you ask them what the difference between a true and a false is. some guys come up with some crazy answers.

ORA is a big user, maybe even the inventor, of the "false perc" term. I guess that if the wholesale them under that name, the lfs will use the same term. BTW, there is an aquacultured black and white Ocellaris clown.

I first heard the term "False Percula" in the early 80's.

You're asking a lot when there are people that can't spell clam or urchin and then expect them to say and spell Ocellaris in forums.
False Perc is way better than nemo though or Dorie for my yellow belly blue hippo. Heck even my yellow tail damsel gets called Dorie

I'd rather hear them call the Ocellaris Clownfish just a Clownfish than False Percula.
And yes, Finding Nemo ruined this hobby, LOL

My memory isn't as good, but I do remember a lfs with the 1st homegrown clowns I had seen in the flesh, called 'false percs"; this would have been about 1983.

I tried arguing with him on something else and he kept on spewing out BS all the time so I gave up and decided to leave him to it.
I actually work for my LFS and I'm not being biased but we do have all the correct names for the fish, including latin names and I have to say the guys who run the store are good but i still hate my boss!
