false percula sucked into impeller

I have a 24g aquapod. My false percula went over the back wall and into the chamber that houses pump. He was headfirst in the bottom, dead, his head chewed up. Why? What can I do to keep that from happening. I suspect the same fate met a green chromis that went MIA, never to be found.

Sounds like an impelling type thing. Maybe take some bridal veil mesh or pantyhose and cover the back areas.
