Doesn't the filter material hold good bacteria?
I thought that is what it was for.
yes it holds bacteria, but it is just a prefrence, its not needed if you have bioballs and other things for bacteria to grow on in the sump or in the tank, but at that point its up to you weither you want it or not

Thanks, for a moment there I thought I had misunderstood why a filter was in there, and I wanted to be sure.

if you go filter you just wash it off about as often as you did the filter in your canister filter. same idea

Are you talking about the pre-filters in the overflow? I wash both of mine every few days.....That is not my main bacterial gatherer (LOL....that sounds dumb) You know what I mean.....I also change the floss in my sump every couple of days
****IMPORTANT NOTE...IF YOU do use the foam prefilters in the overflow...they must be kept clean, or they will mess with your overflow water levels******

thanks for that note meowzer, and now im at a point of asking a question
what does the floss do exactly? i never used it before but i always hear good things about it at my lfs

could you explain your question more? like if its a custom sump or not and if its a drilled tank or not?
It will be a costum sump (ten gallon tank), and will utilize a hang on back overflow, as I cant drill the tank due to it being filled with water.
Basically I'm asking whether it's just the overflow that supports the PVC, or if it needs additional support.

Rubbermaid tub(depending on size) $4 to $10 PVC (Size and length vary) with all connections not more than $15
Leaves plenty for whatever you want inside.
You did say plus the cost of pump!
You can also DIY a trickle filter that's effective and fairly cheap too:
