why does a feather duster leave his tube??
I never had this happen before? I have 12 of them and they all seem happy?
Anyway this one wont do it again I guess as he got caught in a powerhead protection capsule.
So why do they leave their tubes?

The crowns fall off sometimes when there's bad water quality or they're very stressed. The crowns will grow back, however. If the worm left the tube, it was dead. The will not leave if they're alive.

I had a red tube feather duster leave the tube when I was moving it...so I assume if they are disturbed they freak out and leave. They are very exposed out of the tube and sometimes they go back in...Mine didn't, and became fish food.
They will shed the crown if it is damaged, or doesn't have enough food; it will grow back either way but smaller if it is starving.
Leave the tube alone the critter may return unless you found the body.
