feather duster

I heard from my lfs that they lose their crown 3 times in their lifetime. Then the worn dies after thrid time. Anyone can correct me if i have learned wrong. If i'm right what makes it hard is that you'll never know how many times they have lost their crown before you get them.
If i where you just keep a eye one it for a while to see if still alive.

How does the tube look? Still tan in color or is it spotty and black or dark brown? Does the tube close or form a seal when the worm is retracted? I don't know what the life span of a duster but it is possible that it's on its way out but they have been known to drop their feathers and sport a new crown in a week or two.

Feathers will also toss their crowns if they are being picked on. But it is normal and it will be back but smaller in a few weeks, maybe a month. I have never heard of a duster only tossing three times then dying. I guess that is something to read up on
