Feather dusters

My tank is only about a week old but today I found a bunch of tiny feather dusters coming out of my LR. I'm very happy that there's something in there but also a little concerned that they might be bad. Anyone know? There's two red ones that are this big _ fully open and a bunch of transparent ones around this big __ LOL. Their so cute I hope they aren't bad. Are there any of those that ARE bad? I also found two tiny pieces of coral on the rock. I didn't think anything was supposed to happen until the cycling was done? :notsure:

Feather dusters aren't bad. You got some freebies, cross your fingers and they may make it through the cycle.

I loved my little red hitchiker feather dusters, but then my peppermint shrimp ate them all.

I dont want to sound negative, but do a search on Aptasia and compare the pictures to what you see. Hopefully it is not. It is a pain to get rid of and will overtake your tank. If it isnt Aptasia then that is awesome that you got some free dusters , I have a pink one a few BRIGHT blue and a couple green along with a huge Hawaiin FD.
I gotta go make some Pizza

Whew! Nope it's not that. It looks just like a tiny feather duster with red spots on it. I'm going to try and get a pic but their so small I'm not sure they'll be visable in the shot.

Unbelieveable.................My battery in my camera is dead. I'll have to pick up a new one. It is like 4 years old. It won't even hold a charge long enough to turn the thing on.

They shouldn't die and your tank will not go through much if any cycle. If you rock is growing stuff and stuff is alive then it is cured. So all the good bacteria should still be alive so no cycle

really??? I can add stuff??????? :cheer: Before I get too excited.............. My reading as of this morning when I started seeing things.
Salinity 1.0245
Ammonia .25
Nitrite 1.0
Nitrate 20
PH 8.0
The guy at the lfs gave me a sweet pick of some really nice fully cured pieces.
After I spent like 2500. LOL

I'm far from an expert here but the reading in my opinion tells me the tank isn't ready quite yet.
I wouldn't add anything until you get a zero on the ammonia. You will be doing a water cahnge in the next few days and that should solve the trite and trate issue as well.

judging by those numbers I would say your tank is cycling still. W/out seeing prior numbers, I would venture to guess that the ammonia spiked and is going down. Now you'll see your nitrites spike. Once they go to zero and ammonia is zero do your water change and you should be good to go.
It can't hurt to wait a little bit anyway :) Oh and congrats on the Feather Dusters. All I got in my LR was 4 snails.... although that made me pretty happy. Hopefully they'll survive the cycle.

Yeah but if you have trates then the cycle has been completed that is the cycle to Make trates do your water change and you should be good to go if you really want. After your water change I would bet your levels will be pretty much zero. Just don't make mistake of putting to much in a once. Do that part slowly.

The cycle has not been completed until trites and ammonia are zero.

She's not done if she has measurable ammonia levels.

I just did them again. I now have
Salinity 1.0235
Ammonia 0

Nitrite .50
Nitrate 20
PH 8.4
I'm going to the lfs in a few for 20 gal of RO.
This is the first time I've ever done a water change. Is there an easy and hard way? A good and a bad way? Any suggestions to keep the water off my floor would be great.

Make sure it is the same temp. Some people just toss it in, however, I prefer to drip even the top-offs. My 5 gallon water bottles can take a 5 gallon heater and the water is heated to the same temp as the tank. Then, I just run a drip line to the tank.
Seems to me like if there is a salinity change it is just less stress on my tanks.
I'm just cautious all the way around though...
