My canister filter is nothing but a nightmare! I had the marineland c 360, and it worked well, but the constant microbubbles drove me nuts! I re did the connections called the company and still the bubbles are there. So then I bought a Chinese canister from eBay. Worked great super quiet no bubbles. Problem there is the flow and suction. The first day after cleaning seems to work fine. Then it slacks off. Last night I fed some flakes and it didn't even suck those up!!dde01
So my question....... What do you think about putting an aquaclear 110 on my tank? (40 gal breeder) I thought I could make like a mini fuge out of it too. Is this a dumb idea? A sump is out of the question right now thanks!
Hi,
Your problem isn't a canister filter...it's the brand of canister you got. IMO Fluval and Cascade are head and shoulders better then anything on the market. I absolutely hated the Marinland I had too, and you get what you pay for on eBay, I got burned trying to get a cheap skimmer, it NEVER worked from day, one and I can't return it....lesson learned. That being said, yes the HOB will do just fine, and swapping out the media is pretty easy. I have heard of folks turning it into a mini refugium. Personally I think it would prevent you from being able to properly clean your HOB.
If you want a refugium:
An in-tank mini refugium is a great handy dandy way to get the benefits of a refugium without all the hassle. Foster and Smith carries the one I purchased, they have two sizes. The ONLY problem is the sucker type attachment
does not hold. I got some plastic hooks (made for electricity, it has holes to use zip ties) I zip tied the mini fuge to the hooks, and problem solved. At first it looks pretty cool, a little tank within a tank, but Coraline covered it, and it is not even seen against the back wall after a bit. Coraline covers plastic and acrylic faster then anything else in the tank.
