Feeding corals with baster?

I recently decided to feed my corals with a syringe (minus the needle) and was wondering what type of reaction the corals should have. My finger leather, hammer, fox and star polyps close up soon after but reopen within an hour. My concern is with my pearl bubble and toadstool leather. Only half the pearl reopens and the toadstool leather hasn't been the same since. Before I started feeding my corals directly everything was doing great. Is there some special technique I should be using or is slowly squirting them okay? Considering I never had a problem before I am thinking about canning the direct feeding.

Normallt the way that I do this is not spraying them directly rather next to them and letting the current take the food to them. I know the direction of the water flow and release the food about an inch away. When I 1st attempted this I sprayed directly on the corals and they would close up.

My leather and xenia I use the "baster" technique and sometimes I do squirt directly into them, they don't seem to mind and don't close up. Perhaps you're syringing the water with too much pressure, that could cause them to close.

I seem to get better control with a plastic baster or an eye dropper. Again, as mentioned, feed it in the water column near the coral and let the current carry it to the coral.
