feeding my fish

I'm very exctied to say that i finished my cycle the other day and last night I put in my first fish, 3 strip damsels. They are so cool. The only problem I have is they wont come to the surface for food and by the time they do realize there is something there my prefilter/overflow sucks most of it up. What should I do about this.
Also when It comes time for my first water change should I have that water cycled too? Im not too shure on that process.
Other than those two items I couldnt be happier with my tank. All the advice given to me on this site has been extreamly helpful. Thanks to all who help us newbies out.

I turn my return pump off when I feed. Otherwise too much of the food is lost to the overflow and that can create nitrates in the filter. Plus the fish dont get to eat it that way. I still have good flow with maxijets running. I turn it back on after about 15 minutes.
As to the water change, water isnt really "cycled" per se. People recommend that if you are making your own salt water, that you mix it for 24 hours before doing your change. I buy mine from my LFS for cheap, because I dont have room in my condo to make my own.
Just make sure you are using reverse osmosis/deionized water (RO/DI) water, and not tap water, because tap water causes other problems with nutrients, etc.
