Feeding tangs?

I just recently got a hippo tang. I want to know what the best diet for this fish is and also how often i need to feed it. i read a lot about them and i learned that they will eat the algea in your tank as well as plants. My friend has a refugium with callurpa (sp.) growing in it. He said he'll give me some when he cuts it out of his refugium; however, he hasn't yet cut any out. i just went to the store and bought Seaweed Selects for tangs, but that even says on the label to not use it as a primary food source. Since i've had the fish I've only been feeding him prime reef flakes that i feed my clown fish and i see him grazing on the live rock a lot. What is the best diet for him though and how often does he need to be fed?

I have two tangs and I feed them a variety of foods. They like algae products however to thrive. Just mix it up and you'll be fine; flakes, brine, seaweed, etc. I feed mine once a day.

flakes aren't too good for marine fish, however, seaweed selects is great, they can pick at algae in ur tank, there is frozen food for tangs and other algae eating fish...and some meaty foods too.

I feed my tangs brine or ghost shromp nightly, followed by a piece of green seaweed to chew on. Make sure the frozen shrimp you buy has a high protein % to keep them well nourished. Good luck!

Most Tangs need a lot of algae, although hippos are said to feed mostly on zooplankton in the wild, you might try a mixture of meaty seafoods, and plenty of nori. HTH

i put some seaweed selects in my tank yesterday on a piece of rock w/ a rubberband. The tang didn't go near it. the hermit crabs loved it though..... i'll keep trying and see what happens. He seems to love the prime reef flakes only.

Flakes are my tangs fav, along with sushinori.Try some romain lettuce or broccli.My tangs usually get all of them.I have a couple of clips and keep sushinori on one and either the brocc. or the romaine on the other.I'll give them flakes about twice a week just as a treat.
My girlfriends tangs eat a pellet food by kent marine and tear the stuff up.Just flirt with diffrent ideas nd you find what works best for you.

my hippo only like frozen brine and grazing on liverock. He wouldnt eat nori, brocoli, lettuce, or even filet minon.

I just put some grape cullpera (sp) in my tank that a lfs gave to me for free, and wow my Hippo tang loves it!!

DAluminum.....I'd be sure you are soaking that brine in Zoe vit. or your tang will start to get HLLE as mine did. My hippo will eat anything my sailfin does....and only until my sailfin does.
