Fighting the Cyno Battle

Alright, I'm fighting a major cynobacteria battle right now. Needed tap water when my 75 cracked a had to jump to a 90 in the span of 4 hours. It's been up (since the crash) about 2 months. I've got a bad case of the red slime. Been doing a lot of reading on cyno and decided to manually remove some of it. While I was in the tank I decided to take my trust turkey baster and blast off some of the rock. Anybody know if I've done more harm than good on that? When blasting the jet stream of the turkey baster it took off lots of the cyno plus green algae but also blew a lot of dust off as well. Don't know where the dust came from. Does LR deteriorate at all?
Thanks,

the "dust" is normal. live rock gets these kinds of accumulations. blow it off with a turkey baster. there's a good thread on this site by JustinX on getting rid of cyano. if you get everything in order and still have a problem, i've used ultralife's red slime remover with very good results. all depends on the source of your problem. you should definitely test for phosphates, and remove if needed. hope this helps.

Yeah, I read JustinX's killer post. That's why I tried to remove it by hand. Good to hear about the dust. I've got phosban in right now and I'm back to RO water. I'm going to check out the ultralife's red slime remover. What about my sand bed and where I scooped out the cyno. It came up in clumps. Did I do anything to harm the pods and or bacteria?
Thanks again,

imo, no. cyano is more of an eyesore than anything. but, i'ld be careful messing with the sand too much. check out the product i mentioned. a lot of people will get on here and tell you that you have to identify the source and correct it. the thing is, you've already done that by going back to ro water. your decision.

Be very careful with the ultralife red slime remover It will greatly lower O2 levels. I lost all my fish once over night using it.

i do happen to use power filters, which help with that situation. that is something to consider.

Holy bubbles! Not 1/2 hour after blowing my LR off with the trusty turkey baster I find they are loaded with microbubbles! Blew them off a second time to get rid of the bubbles and they came right back. There was a post a day or two ago about something similiar. Technical term but basically just part of the nitrogen system Right?
