filter cartriges

I was wondering if in a SW tank if you are supposed use the filter cartiges with the carbon in them or if eventually you can run them with out carbon. In my FW tanks i only used carbon in the begining and now i make my own filters with out the carbon.

if you dont have 1-2 lbs of live rock per gallon of water you will need some type of biological filtration. as long as there is a filter sponge in there you should be just fine. i use no media at all in my tanks since they have more than enough live rock and live sand. you dont need to use carbon all the time. i only use it once or twice a month for 2-3 days at a time.
