3 Years seems like a good time frame in keeping a (what I assume) successfull tank. Why do you want to change from the canister?

when I started I had picked out a wet dry system, after 2 nights the noise from the tank was so loud ( from water coming into system ) we could hear it up stairs, took it back in haste got the canister. Now that i am a little smarter ,and after reading and reasearching and wasting some cash on U V filters a small aqua clear that has to be attached to U v filter as a pump seems like a lot of extra in tank. please feel free to add some advice , weather I am off track or if there is something better I can do to add .

No, It is your tank. I was just courious as to why, If what you have is working, why you would want to fix it? You know a, don't fix it if it isn't broke thing.
I would assume that you don't have any kind of a sump. So, is the tank drilled or were you using a HOB over flow system? Also, how much water were you putting through it? Wet/dry or any other system will be quite if not silent when set up proper. It might have been a blessing in disguise back when you decided to ditch the wet/dry system. If they aren't kept up right, they will become a real PITA for nitrates. As well as canisters can. I am sure you know from reading.

Now, I guess the next logical questions are,
Who much time do you want to spend on the tank?
What lives in the tank?(ie...do you have corals,a manderan,ect..)
How much time do you spend on the tank now?
What are some direct issues you have, that you want to adress?(ie..high nitrates, ect..)
Do you want more water volume?
Can you place another tank under you current one? I know space gets taken up if not used for something.
We can start there I suppose.

Right now I spend about 5 hours every other week with water changes,
( in summer I have a small amount of time to dpend on tank )
winter there is more time to spend
tank contains
urchin , 3 peppermint shrimp , 2 red leg hermits , serpant star , 2 to 3 different snails , emerald crab , yellow star polop , mushroom coral , 1 small leather , maroon clown , 1 purple pseudrchromis ,
feel pretty good about water flow
still wondering about U V filter keep or turn off
right now pretty good amount of alage
( hoping it is from the high temp cause of summer )
last couple of readings were all good .
