what is a good site online to buy a good filter, pump, protien skimmer, etc?
and on the site which ones are good and worth buying that will work together nicely?

If your doing a fish only tank, then a canister will do fine, not to say that a wet/dry wouldn't be better. A good place is www.fishsupply.com
Excellent service!
However, if your looking for a wet/dry then go to
www.petsolutions.com
They have the Aqua Clear Pro Series which includes the Rio pump that runs the protein skimmer and pre-filter included.

i ordered the aqua clear pro series w/ the protein skimmer...it says the filter comes with a rio pump to run the protein skimmer, but what pump would you suggest to run the filter?

Yes, the system does come with a Rio pump for the protein skimmer, if you want to save yourself some trouble from the beginning, I suggest you don't use the Rio pump they provide b/c sooner rather then later it will stop functioning the way it should.
What type of pump depends on what size wet/dry you purchased.
I have the Aqua Clear 150 Pro Series, I use a Mag Drive 3, it works great. But you may need a stronger one or a weaker one depending on which model you get. Also, if you haven't put together the system yet, one thing to remember is that you have to becareful while putting the PVC's & washers in, b/c it WILL leak if you don't do it just right.

Actually, correct that, I use a MAG DRIVE 3 for the protein skimmer, b/c the RIO broke after a few weeks, and I use a MAG DRIVE 5 for returning the water back into the tank.

Mag drive pumps work really well I use one for my return pump, for the aquaclear protien skimmer I use the CAP1800 due to its size it fits well because its a fairly tight squeze wher the skimmer is located. For great prices check out www.championlighting.com They saved me about 100 bucks on my mag pump vs. my lfs
