Filter help

Ok my friend just got a 55 and he wants canister filters and he wants to either get two H.O.T magnum filters Does up to 55 gallons which hand right on the tank Or get one 350 magnum that does up to 100 gallons which doesn't hang on the tank.Which would you recommend for his tank?:notsure: :help:

I've had bad experiences with the H.O.T Magnums (two defective ring seals, both leaked right outa the box)... in fact because of it I wouldn't buy any of their products. Get a Fluval can, they are awesome, mine has been running for two years w/ no problem.
Just my opinion.

Please keep in mind that neither of the Magnum filters (HOT or 350) are designed for "biological" filtration, they are good however for mechanical and chemical filtration needs.
Make sure your friend provides plenty of LS/LR or other "surface area" for bacteria to grow.
The other choices like Rena Filstar or Ehiem or Fluval do provide for bacterial media, but their effeciency is compromised when "packed" with said media and the available surface area (for bacteria) is minimal.

I ran my 180gal off four biowheels and a mag-350 with powerheads for quite a while. I wouldn't recommend this but it did work.
