i eventually want to keep corals, still working on lighting for my 37 show tank..
Here's the question, if you had a tank that was not drilled and not in a good spot for an over flow, would you go canister filter, or hob filter, if so which one? Also, will this be stable enough to keep lps coral long term, without a fuge or sump. Isn't a wet/dry canister basically a sump, water out, water thru stuff, water back in?? I know they need to be cleaned!!!
Any help would be appreciated!!! Also with 37 gal tank how many gph should filter run?
i would really like to get rid of my eclipse hood!

thanks a lot!!

If you are going to use live rock for biological, then you don't need that part in your filter. The HOB filters I like are Whisper 60 (very simple to clean), Emperor 400, or Marineland HOT Magnum (I have a 350 Magnum but I would like to try the HOT Magnum). You only need these types of filters when you stir up your tank with cleaning, vacuuming, algae scraping, or running carbon. After you tank is good and clean, you don't really need to run them all the time unless you want to run carbon, or add water circulation.
The purpose of a sump is not to just have water in and out. It's a separate place, unsually hidden from view, where you can mount things like heaters, skimmers, filters, etc. Also a good place to grow macro-algae. You can't do all those things with a canister filter.
Without a sump with macro-algae growing in it, the only way you will have to remove nitrates is with water changes. Some people do use HOB filters (with the guts removed) to grow macro-algae.

I would go with a HOB skimmer rather than either of your choices put forth.

I Would Do A Hob Skimmer And A Hob Fuge. Actually Thats Waht I Have On My Tank Now And I Think It Works Great For The Smaller Tanks

i have chosen a aqua c remora skimmer - i have currently 30lbs lr, going to 60lbs soon.
i thought i would always need a filter though??
i have been thinking about using an old whisper as a fuge??? so with 60lbs lr and skimmer and fuge, i wouldn't need any mechanical filtration?????

The skimmer is your "filter", just not in the traditional "media" genre which you are used to.
The whisper would be too small to be used as a fuge, per se. Best to use that (hang on back unit?) to put carbon in, or phosban, to use as a place to dose anything you need to, and as well for surface agitation.
