filter question

i am using a drip filter with a filter pad. i know that you are not supposed to clean the whole filter pad because it holds important bacteria. however i do feel it needs to be cleaned sometimes.
how would you clean this. is anyone out their running a similar system how do you clean yours. what percent of the filter pad do you clean and how often.
any advice on this subject would help

By drip do mean a wet dry?you could just for a week put in another fiter pad along the other pad {if you can,if there is room in you filter to seed the new pad with bacteria then replace the old one.

To remove the gunk, but keep the good bacteria, wring out the pad/sponge IN TANK WATER. (please use a bucket, not your tank!)
