Filter sock or no filter sock in refugium?

Half way done building my first refugium, 20 gal. for my 75 gal. DT. So far so good.
There seems to be some difference of opinion if a filter sock should be used on the inlet from the tank. Some people just run the water straight into the first chamber with the skimmer, others say you have to run it into a filter sock first.
Has anyone tried with and/or without? Opinions?

I have had my fuge set up for 8-10 months I haven't used one yet. I'm thinking of putting one on though.

I have one tank with socks and it works very well. It cleans up the water nicely and then I just wash the sock in the washmachine without soap. It's very dirty when i finally have to remove it and my water is very clear.
I also have another tank that uses the blue/grey media in the sump tank and cleans the water the same way as the sock. It's only a 12" x 12" filter media that has water moving across it as well.
