Do you need to have one. I have one but after a couple of days it seem to clog up. It also seem to slow down the water flow that pass along the refugium. Will the cheato in the refugium trap waste or is that a bad idea?

i use them. they keep my first chamber of the sump very clean. i do change them out every 3 days or so though, or they will clog, as you said. you don't need one, but think of all that stuff that's clogging that sock- where would it go if the sock wasn't there to catch it?
i don't want that stuff in my tank.

i would think that it would be a good idea, thats the whole idea behind refugims, to cultivate algea through comsumption of excess organics/inorganics.. waste= food for cheato..

you don't need them, but they are one stage of mechanical filtering. I use them on the overflows into my refugium and on the outputs of my protein skimmer, carban and rowas fluidizers (I have all those lines running into one sock). so I use a total of three and change them every couple days. It does make a differense in your refugium and the overall clarity of the water.

Just make sure that you get enough socks so you can switch them out every few days. I only got what i needed the first time and had to by more from the internet because my LFS was double the price on the same sock. They work great.

How do you determine the size to get and good micron?
Other question, doesn't this make yer sump nosier as the hose isnt in the water anymore but suspended above the sock? Or am I thinking of this wrong?

i have my drains under water inside the sock. i don't use the sock holder. i just wedge mine in between the rim of the tank, and the skimmer. i would imagine you would heard the water somewhat, if you used the holder which suspends it above the water, but you can add a 3" or so piece of pvc to that holder and then your water will exit below the surface, inside the sock.
