Hello,
I have a 55 gallon tank with some coral and a few fish. I have a whisper hang on filter thats rated up to a 40 gallon tank. After about a week of getting a new filter cartridge it turns pure light brown..... Is this because i have an underpowered filter???
And after a couple days i get algae on the sand....
If so I ordered a 305 Fluval Canister filter that should be here any day......
Your thoughts?>?

IMO what you have now is underated, and the canister should help. What is that rated for?
Make sure to clean each unit out frequently, as they trap all sorts of gunk which can cause higher nitrates etc.
