I recently changed from a hang on filter to a Fluval canister. I have heard that you need to leave the outtake tube out of the water a little bit so it trickles above the water (like a bio wheel) to let the gases escape is this true????

I have absolutely no idea, but I'll chime in, if for no other reason just to give you a bumb back up to the top so that someone with this type of equipment might can help. But based on my understanding, you are correct. All systems like this have some escape tube which is sticking out of the water.
