Filter????

Today i went to go open up my Eheim filter, and i unclamped the sides and water started to spray everywhere! normally i dont change out my filters, my dad usually does, so i have noo idea what to do! i tried unplugging it but it just sprayed more water. how am i suppose to open it!!???
PLEASE HELP!!

did u turn off the lil ball valve?
1. unplug
2. turn lil ball/flow valve off
3. open and clean
at least thats how our fluval works on our FW tank
