Filtering Sand

First of all I would like to say hey to all of you on the forum as this is my first post. I've read the forum for months now, but just never felt the need to post.
But since I am planning on starting my own tank soon I should probably get some more info.
How do you clean the sand?
Do you use under-gravel filters, sand sifting stars, what?

i dont filter any sand or use an underground filter benifical bacteria and other good organizimes live in the sand. I only have about one and a half inch of sand bed so i dont get a build up of things that you dont want to mix up. welcome to the forum i have not been here very long, but this place is sweet, everyone is very helpfull and just want you to have a good tank. nobody is trying to sell you any thing and are just doing it for pure enjoyment. this place is great for any questions you have.

Don't need to clean the sand all you really need are some critters to turn over the top layer like nassarius snails. Sand sifting stars will eat all of the beneficial organisms out of the sand they can be used but I prefer to keep the critters in the sand.
