Filters

Hi, I am new at this and I was wondering if everone can give me some input on filters. I am taking it one step at a time picking item by item.
I am starting with the filter because I need to find a very quiet one. My hubby and I live in a two room apartment (we are in college and he is an Resident Assistant so we have no choice plus its free :joy: ) So it is going probably in our living/dinning room and when the tv is on for movies etc. we would like it to be semi quiet.
Anyway I have seen under gravel filters. Would that even work with sand or could you layer gravel under the sand or sand equivalent I choose? Are those completely silent because of no running water or are they the same about of noise?
Also if anyone wants to be a "mentor" for this process let me know. I want as much help as I can get
Thanks
Jess

Welcome to the forum!!!
Personally I would not do a undergravel filter, they're worthless....Get a Canister Filter, just make sure you clean it often. I run Eheim Canister Filters, they're very quiet, no noise at all. Make sure you get some powerheads for circulation! Also make sure when you do clean the canister filter, DO not wash it in tap water, use your tank water during water change. DO not take the bottom PVC pellet looking things out, just lightly rinse it, that's where your bacteria grows. Everything else you can just wash'em as clean as you want them to be. :happyfish
