Filtration Question

I will be starting up a small nano reef tank soon (5 gallons). I want to keep corals and maybe clams (I will have MH lighting, When they grow larger they will be placed in my 125g). While doing a search I came across a nano-skimmer, its a really small protein skimmer and it would be perfect for the tank I want to set up.
So my question is: Can I run a nano reef with only a skimmer and LR/LS as filtration?

On something that small you would be fine with just a skimmer IMO if you do 2 gallon a week water changes you will have no proble just get some water movement in there
