Sumps are preferred because you can "grow" things in them...pods/algae/worms. A canister filter should be alright if you put LS wrapped in nylon and bits and pieces of LR on the trays in the filter.

just getting into a wet dry filter kinda scares me I don't know what i am in for I have never delt with them or a sump for that matter but I want to make a nice reef tank.

The sump also lets you put all your filtration, topoff, and heating equiptment under the stand, hidden from sight.

Can you get pods and other critters in the ls that comes in bags at the lfs? is this really ls since its in a bag like that?

Some pods, but really limited compared to the live sand you can get from the live rock collectors/aquaculturists. You're not going to get any larger critters out of the sealed bags, there just isn't enough oxygen to sustain them.

I bought some chaeto from a guy on this message board in the classifieds.. it had a few pods... however I haven't seen many.. and I'm just wondering if I have enough to reproduce... do they reproduce asexually or sexually? any other info is welcomed aswell

Some pods are actually imature forms of larger creatures and won't reproduce. Others seem to come out of nowhere, as thier immature forms are too small to see, and you may have alot more than just what you can see now.

I didnt know canister filters were'nt good for reef aquariums. Glad I read this thread. What do I need to do then? Do I need to do like said before and take out the carbon and put ls and little pieces of lr in it. I'm like briant0625 I havent never used a sump or anything before. My canister filter is a magnum if that helps any.

Well, I'm not saying they are bad for them...there is just a better way. I have a Cascade 1500 on my tank but only because it was my only option. You can ask mudplayerx about running carbon...he will say that unless your tank is cloudy, it is pointless to run carbon. In a saltwater tank, carbon will last about 14 days tops.

Lots of live rock and a hang on back protien skimmer will do the trick if you don't have the space for a sump or wet/dry. A protien skimmer in a sump is a really good option though if you can do a bit of DIY to customize the sump to your needs.

I currently run a fluval 404 on my reef. But I also have a sump/fuge set-up as well. I mainly use the canister filter for mechanical filtration and run a little bit of carbon as well. Some people will argue that they trap waste and will lead to a nitrate source. Just clean it every couple weeks or so and you will fine.

How handy are you? You could probably make a better sump for the same price or less.
A sump is basilcly the wet/dry without the bioballs, but with extra baffles for water flow/depth control.

i just run the standard foam that comes with the unit and fill two of the chambers with a filter floss type material and carbon...
And skidmore is right, if you building your own sump, just add an extra baffle or two...
You could use one for mechanical media (floss etc.)
And the other for carbon
