filtration

what kind of filtration would anyone recommend for a 37 gal. tank looking to get rid of the Eclipse hood I have. The guy at my LFS said if I get a protein skimmer I could take the fabric off my biowheel and stick it in the skimmer to offset having to recycle the tank, any thoughts on any truth behind this.

I'd just put the whole wheel in the tank if you are wanting to keep your bacteria. Do you have any liverock and sand? How long has this tank been running?
If you do have a decent amount rock and sand you shouldn't have a problem just taking the filter off and starting up the skimmer (get a good one, like an AquaC Remora).

I think I would still have a filter of some sort, such as an Aqua Clear AC 110 as its easy to add carbon or other things in it if its necessary or a piece of sponge etc can be installed for mechanical filtration, and a AC110 will give you some good flow in the tank a well....As long as you have a decent amount of live rock it shold be fine. Of course a skimmer si great to have as well, but I do not think I would rely on just a skimmer as there is gonna be junk that the skimmer is not going to remove that is best taken out with some form of mechanical filter.
