fimby Eel

I picked up 13 inch long fimby. I have him in a 40 breeder for now. I had, I stress had, a yellow tail damsel and six line wrasse in there as well. I cannot get this guy to eat frozen food of any sort. It ate my six line first. I waited a few days and tried to feed pieces of shrimp, squid, octopus, and mackeral. Nothing. They were all soaked in ghv garlic supplement. Now may damsel is gone.
Any tips? Im going to keep the tank fishless now and try in a week but I think I may have a fish eater on my hands.

I have a SFE I used to just throw food in the tank, he was never interested in it, until I started using a homemade feeding stick, wave it in front of him and he's on it.

that's because eels are pretty much blind, just throwing food in the tank won't do much. you need to use the feeding sticks so they can sense food near them and then they smell it.

hahaha. i actually laughed pretty good. what is sad is that I have tried it. I figure Im good for a few days. It was about 4 days in between killings. I'll give the silversides a shot. I may just end up getting a bunch of damsels for activity and food and or a few peppermint shrimp. Nothing like a natural live diet right? I will try my hardest to get him on dead frozen food.

I wouldn't put anything live in the tank with him until he starts eating frozen, if you put damsels in there and he still has a taste for live food, he will wait until you put something live in the tank to eat. and if you did want to keep him on a live diet, damsels would add up real quick.

Dude you got like two monthes before its a serious issue. Starve em and if it goes a month then throw a damsel or two in there. Also clams, whether it be the frozen or live littlenecks are what I've had the most success with getting eels to eat

ok that is dumb advice IMO, don't starve your eel, try every couple of days with frozen foods. but the clam suggestion is good advice.

I wasn't saying don't offer him food. I was saying only offer him frozen and if he doesn't eat it then oh well. Eels are lucky to get a meal once every couple weeks in the wild so for one to not eat for a month is not a big deal

ahhh damsels are what $3.00. So what. Its natural food. I will throw in some other fish ever once in a while. I think its great he has a taste for live fish. I will just keep a bunch in there and then replace as needed. He eats when he wants and everybody is happy.

if cash is no object.. then why not! I feed my FDL live meals every couple of days and we enjoy him and his attack dances and stare offs with the shrimps lol..

if you got the extra cash to replace them then go for it, live natural food would be way better than the frozen. I was just thinking about the money side of it

If he eats like he has which is every 4th or 5th day then its no big deal on the live food. It cost more for the frozen food I bought and listed earlier than it would a few damsels or other cheaper fish. I can get 5 for $20 at my LFS and that would last over a month and give myself some activity in the tank. Im not going to throw in a baby panther grouper or clown fish in there unless I can get them for cheap. Generally speaking they are not.
Its easier this way anyway. No food preperation. Zero mess. No leftovers. I feed the damsels some flake food. I have some hermits and snails in there as well. Id rather have flake food breaking down than chunks of dead shrimp or clams anyway.
Just to get this straight are damsels a good feeder fish? Should I mix up damsels? Or buy other fish? Add a some peppermint shrimp or crabs?

I don't see how they could be bad feeder fish. there a marine species and im sure fimby's eat them in the wild. you could also add some shrimp and crabs, but I would get like 2 peppermints and a small type of crab so see if he is interested in them before you by a nice amount to throw in the tank. I think you will be fine, I didn't know he ate like that so in your situation feeding live wouldn't effect your wallet, but if it was my fimby, he is a little pig looking for food every day

have any pics of him in the tank?
