ok so many of you opposed me diving in and purchasing an octopus for my 29 gallon biocube... so i am going to purchase a much larger tank about 125 gallon... but my dad wants me to see if i can handle taking care of an octo. in my biocube first.. so... what type of octopus can get... that will stay small enough for a few months so that it will fit in a biocube... but will grow large and fill up a 125 gallon?? it must remain small for... o say 3 months... if possible??? and yes i am researching day and night before i buy one.

well, since octos dont live long they can grow fast, id say u may
be able to pull off a bimac, MAY

In my opinion a bimac would do fine in a 29g under the care of an experienced keeper, although I know the general consensus is around 40-50g. But it makes no sense to get an octopus and move it to a larger tank when it outgrows the smaller tank. They only live for 1 year from birth (probably less unless you have a chiller) and therefore grow extremely fast. Octopus are NOT hard to keep in the proper setup, so my advice: go ahead and get the bigger tank before you get an octopus because you WILL succeed if you do it right.

well... thanks for the advice guys... but im going to use him outgrowing the tank as an exscuse to get a bigger tank... tehe... sounds evil... but i will get another octo if that one dies before the bigger tank

But it wont 'outgrow the tank'...itll just die mysteriously and/or escape. And therefore lead to your failure in keeping an octopus and you wont get a larger tank....

Im all for experimental reef keeping but this just sounds like a bad idea to me. Why not just keep some snipes in a tank?

Jon
now if that wasnt a subtle insult i have no idea what is

I don't think it was an insult. I think he was trying to point out that if the octupus dies in the small tank, which is a test to see if he can get the bigger tank, then dad won't get him the bigger tank.

I like the exuse for a bigger tank. When I was considering what to do with my 125g, I thought of getting an octo, but then I considered the fact that there is 6ft of open space on the back to secure. Maybe upgrade to a smaller tank that is not so long? Just a thought. Good luck and post pictures if you get an octo.

No offense, but I dont know whats so hard to understand? There is NO experienced octopus keeper that would recommend you get an octopus for your 29g tank. Some animals dont mind crowding as much as others, but octopus are smart and very delicate. Unless you are extremely experienced it will just end up dying or escaping. Why dont you just move on and get something else until you can afford a proper octopus tank? Theres hundred of interesting organisms that are very suitable for a 29g tank.

as i said b4 jon.... i will be getting a bigger aquarium... i just have to prove to my dad that i can handle it in a small aquarium... i understand that it might be a little cramped for a little while.. but for a bimac... it wont be as to the point that its cruel or inhumane.....

What I think Jon is saying is that the octopus in that size tank will likely die because its crammed and then your dad will have the impression that you can't properly keep one and won't let you get the bigger tank. In my opinion I would upgrade before doing it. But a 125 sounds a bit large to purchase just to put a octo in it. I think you should get a 55 for the octo instead and sell the biocube and then put that money towards a 125 community tank.

Get over it. This is a bad idea. It will be a waste of money (which doesn't seem like a problem, and is leading you to some very bad ideas)
This is what will happen. In your quest to trick Daddy into buying you a new tank, you will probably end up killing an octopus or two and failing anyway.
Listen to the people with experience. They know what they are talking about. No amount of "JUST A LITTLE WHILE" is going to make 29g enough.
Get over it, find something that fits your tank, or stop wasting your dad's money.

It sounds like you have made up you mind prior to even posting this third post on the same issue. So guys don't bash him any more he gets the point, and will do what he wants. Lets give hime some good advice on how one could even keep one in a bio cube. I would even like to see all your ideas on thi as I am sure they will be very diffrent.

man i would love to upgrade and my dad said i could if we have a bigger house
any ways no don't do it just let him look at this thread and he will understand

I was thinking exactly what fish3 just said. Why not have your dad look at this thread? Maybe he'll understand that you need a bigger tank for an octopus and that a biocube won't do. Whatever you decide to do I hope it works.
