Finally, a LIONFISH

I finally can get a Lionfish. I ordered one from my LFS and hes going to be bringing it in sometime next weekend. Its going to be a fuzzy dwarf or zebra dwarf. Its wild caught and not used to eating frozen foods. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice for keeping a lionfish. I know i should feed them live ghost shrimp or guppies at the beginning. Can i keep them in a 10g with aerator? How can i get it to feed on frozen food and what frozen food? Silversides? or Mysis? I am planning to feed it every other day. Thanks.

you want to start off feeding it every day if its only little, cos when its growing it needs its food. and 10g is too small, you want maybe 20g IMO, i wanted to keep one once in a 10g but it is too small:(
start off feeding it 1 ghostshrimp a day, then after about a week or so, try a frozen mysis or so, then if it doesnt eat, try it everyday for 4 days, by the forth day, it should be hungry, so it should take it quite nicely.
best person to talk to on these fish is cranberry, she is the lionfish queen, knows everything needed to know about them

I agree, Cranberry will chime in. Search this site, this is a very common topic and I'm sure you'll find lots of good info. BTW, all lions are wild caught.

I think what you mean by the 10g is for the feeder fish or shrimp,,,, truthfully you can just keep them in a gallon bucket of water for about a week, so just buy a dozen or so at a time... It can takes WEEKS +++ to ween them off live foods if they will even do it....i would feed every day for the first week and then go to every other,,, dwarf lions dont eat alot of food,,and if you can gut load the live feeders especially if they are freshwater,,,(if it is big enough get some very small chromis or damsels for food, then all you have to do is put 3 or 4 in the tank with him)

ahhh i see now yes lols, sorry i thought you ment keep the lion in a 10g.
yeh lions tend to eat one big mouthful and thats it for the day. so theres no harm in putting 3 or 4 in at a time.
and yess, please post some pics whn you get:D

cranberry that link really helped:D
my angler decided not to eat frozen after he ate that chromis:(
i used to fish alot so i have tons of fishing line, 10Lb will probs be better, cos its thinner:D and theres no chance of a angler breaking 10Lb line.
the method worked perfectly:D
used lance fish and he took it nicely:D

He's not taking frozen now because he's full. I'm sure he'll go back to it. He doesn't need to be fed that often. I feed Mon. Wed and Fri. Be careful how much you feed him. The gases caused by rotting undigested food in their bellies has been linked to one of the causes of S.A.D. (Sudden Angler Death).
Actually the 50lb isn't because of it's strength. It's the right thickness to give you control over the line. A 10 lb line will just flow in the tank and you wouldn't be able to control it. In the video with the glass... that's smaller line and inappropriate for the feeding stick method.

How big are the lance fish you buy? Any chance with a lancefish pic along side the angler?
You never know, the red may work. Fish don't see colours the way we do. But if he took live already he really shouldn't have a problem with the visual aspect of it.
