Ok,, well sort of. thjs question is easier than my lst one. I am going to hookup a sump for my 46 gallon fowlr, to put my berlin skimmer/ heater in. Not much else will fit under my tank.. So my question is,, what is the right flow rate? The optimum flow for the berlin skimmer is 500 gph, and that seems like it would be abt. right for my tank. Problem is I cant find any overflows with the same gph. could I get one with a higher gph? Also,, for the dirty water going down to the sump, do I need a pump sucking it down> Or will gravity get that 500 gph down there??

carorella, the gph on the skimmer is just for the pump to run it which is seperate from the sump system, what is the flowrate on your overflow box? the flow rate on this and the return pump should be matched as close as you can, if one is going to be higher than the other the return pump should be higher gph and then valve it down(dont forget the head pressure on the pump, how high the pump has to push the water up effects how high the gph actually is). haveing an overflow that handles more gph than the pump can be done but it is more tricky and sensitive i think, this is the way mine is and after a very short time i am ready to get a larger pump so they are closer matched. you dont need a pump for the overflow gravity will do the work as long as the plumbing is large enough.
