I finally got my first job as a RN. I can't believe it took as long as it did. Everyone thinks that hospitals fight tooth and nail for nurses, especially male nurses, but at least in Pittsburgh it's not that way. I think it's b/c we have so many nursing school programs around here so supply beats demand. Either way, I'm not crazy about the unit that I got the job on, but it's a foot in the door. It's a neuro trauma ICU. I'm also not crazy about the pay. I was hoping to start out around $24/ hr but this hospital starts it's new nurses out at $22.19/hr which is kind of a slap in the face. The folks on this floor seem really nice, though, and the people that interviewed me said that the people that work on the floor are like a big family. They go out for drinks every other week and hang out outside of work. I am very eager to start getting regular paychecks so I can get caught up. Once the first month of work is over, I should be good and I want to start putting $ aside for a motorcycle. I'm hoping to have one before the weather gets crappy again.

Congratulations! Lets see...a little less than $2.00 for what you hoped to make an hour, doesn't sound like a slap in the face to me...considering the market for nurses is just not in demand in your area. You did good!
