I finally got around to giving my tank a good cleaning last tonight. I don't recommend anyone let their's go this long, but it's funny how it's been so stable with no maintenance.
I have a 90 gallon reef with several types of corals and fish with 100 lbs of fiji and 200 lbs or aragonite that I added 2 years ago. Just for fun, I checked my ammonia, nitrites and nitrates before cleaning. 0, 0 and 0. The only filtration I have been using is the DSB and the live rock. The sump is completely empty otherwise. No bioballs, no sponge, nothing else.
I realized that I had not done a water change since May 2003 (15 months ago). During this time, I've only cleaned the glass with a magnet, replaced evaporation water, added kalk and fed the tank. I have just noticed in the past couple of weeks that I have a couple of bubble algea, but everything else is clean.
I took out the maxijets and gave them a good cleaning. These powerheads are great. I then took out the Mag-7 that has never been cleaned or even opened in over 3 years since it was new. Surprisingly, it was not that bad but did need a cleaning.
I have had a UV sterolizer inline ever since the tank was new, but it has not been on in over 2 years, so I took the opportunity to remove it from the system. I then decided to clean my Berlin Turbo skimmer that has been turned off for over a year because it is basically a POS and more trouble than it is worth. However, I thought I would fire it up to see how much stuff it might pull out.
Everything is back humming again. I still have not done the water change. Ran out of time. I hope to get to it this weekend.
