Fine sand and cloudy water...

I am in the process of changing everything over from a 55 with crushed coral to a 75 with sand. The sand I got is really really fine and it is really clouding the water. I rinsed it really well too. I moved over most of my live rock but was going to wait until the water clears before adding my livestock. It has been almost 4 days now and it is still cloudy. And if I even breathe on the sand it causes a sandstorm! Am I going to have to live with this or will it eventually settle and stay put? I put some carbon filters in the sump to try and catch some of the dust but it doesn't seem to be helping much. Any advice appreciated!

Yeah run more floss and change it every day. As the tank cycles the sand will get "stickier" and settle down. Look at the outflow of your filter andor power heads also they may be stirring the sand some.

We had this same problem... our sand was really clouding our tank but we just ended up changing our filter a couple times and within a couple days it was settled. But yeah.... we rinsed it SO many times before putting it in the aquarium and it still released this milky powder.

Keep the LR out of the sandstorm. 4 or 5 days should rap up the worst of sandstorms. "Your almost there"... I know its hard but leave it be...

I recently moved everything from my 55 to my 78 and even though we washed the sand real good, like yourself I also got a terrible sandstorm. What I did to help out was I took two extra 20-40 HOB filters I had laying around and fired them up in the tank. After about 5 hours of them running (along with my normal 30-60 HOBs I am running) the water cleared right up. So if you have any extra filters laying around I'd suggest you toss them in to help clear out the fine sand particles.
