Fireplace

I love our wood-burning fireplace. A bit of work, sure, but it adds so much charm!
We love having it burning while guests are over. It also makes a great desktop background!

Every time I look deep into a fire, I remember the sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by William Bradford and Johnathan Edwards and recite a few lines...

I recently installed a set of gas logs in our FP (always had wood-burners before), and we're really liking it. They look pretty darned good these days (they even have glowing embers), there's no mess, and it keeps the family room "just toasty enuff".

Who needs a FP in your part of CALI?
LOL

That was the last thing I would ever think of, but now you changed my mind.
The fire does create an immense mystique.

We have gas logs too. You would have a hard time telling it isn't wood with the glass doors shut.

I used to think wood was the WTG, but gas is cleaner all the way around (pollution-wise), and you don't have to cut/buy/haul wood, and the wood doesn't have to be "seasoned". Then there's cleaning the ashes out of the FP, watching for "sap pops", etc.
The gas isn't as "fun" sometimes, but now that we have one, I can definitely see the allure...

I don't mind cutting the wood or cleaning the FP... but I agree that for people that dislike those tasks, gas is probably better.

I'm not much for wood burning fire places, however, I love free standing wood burning furnaces/stoves. I remember cooking breakfasts with my parents over a wood burning stove in the winter when I was a little boy. :D Just brings back the nostalgia.

Awwww :)
Wow, we had a bit of a scary incident:
I was cleaning out the fireplace... and I dumped the bucket of ashes into the woods in our front yard... me + my dad were chopping some wood near the garage, and we look over and a fire had started... probably because there was still a really hot ash in the bucket. Luckily we were able to take it out with our feet!

How old are you......I burn all the time....A nice thing is my buddy is from Vermont....He loves to come over and split for me.....He doesn't have a FP, so I get the best of both worlds.....He misses home, so he splits my wood....I get to burn it with no aches and pains......

That's what a lot of people say, but IMO, I see a big difference between gas and wood.
I used to think that until I saw one of the newer ones like we have. It looks like flickering embers in the bottom with the flame coming off the logs like you'd expect in a wood burner.

LOL! Never say never. My fireplace was originally wood burning. The people I bought the house from converted it. It is illegal for me to convert it back. In the Montana town where my wife grew up they banned fireplaces and woodstoves that didn't have catalytic converters on them. We are talking a town that didn't even have natural gas until about 10 years ago. If they could ban them there it could happen anywhere. Those "approved" wood burners ain't cheap. My father in law spent nearly 5 grand on his. That thing would run you out of the house which was better than 2000 square feet,
I do like the smell of burning pine though. We have a fire table out on the patio for just that.

Well, until the gov't bans what type of wood or fireplace I have in my tank, I'm gonna have my good old wood burnin' FP.
Lol
