Firetails nesting?

We have a 55 gal reef tank that is almost 2 years old. Maybe 8 months ago we got a pair of firetails, up until about 2 weeks ago they were very active, then we noticed that one of them was "missing". We found it alive and well in the back corner of the tank nestled under a rock. It will come out at feeding time then go right back to the spot. I am not sure how to tell if they are male or female, but something tells me that one has laid eggs, that is just a guess. Anyone have any insight on this?
