First fish

I am a few weeks off from putting fish in. I want to make a good first choice and still have a cool looking fish. What would be good?
My thinking will be a kole tank? Throw me some Ideas about good "beginner fish" that wont be aggressive towards new fish down the road.
75 gallon with soon to be 50 lbs lr and 5" dsb that will hopefully be live soon after the rock is up and running

I bet you are thinking of quarantining that soon-to-be first fish because G*d forbid you got a sick fish, that would be a drawback in your enjoying your main tank if it were infested with ick.
And for that first fish (I am partial)I think a hippo tang will be awesome.

Kole Tangs are not good starter fish. They are mellow for tangs, but they are not mellow. Mine killed a raccoon butterfly I had.
If you start with that, assuming it lives, anything you put in after will most likely get a beating, esp. if you don't move rocks around.
Most people here will say that tank is the minimum size for a tang.
Maybe down the road, but ~I~ wouldn't start with it.

not many people mention blue gudgeons they are a very pretty fish and seem to be real hardy also they get along great with firefish. can be kept as 1 or in pairs. my ff, bg, scooter and green chromises were with me when i first started and went through a lot, and lived through it its been about a year now and their still with me. and none of them are aggressive at all and inexpensive

Hi--
My 150 is about 3-4 months old now...lots of corraline and pods....I just put in a couple of weeks ago, my first fish....it was a Royal Gramma.
Just a gorgeous fish, a little shy, but comes out a lot, and is bolder than when we first got him/her... eats like a horse.....
Either way, good luck....but if you get a Gramma, you won't be disappointed....my next choice will probably be a few chromis's
