i wanna start my first frag tank but i need help in finding a good frag tank. Also i need some advice on how to start it and stuff like that. Please help.
First off... welcome to the forums!
I personally love frag tanks. I don't even know why, lol.
To really give you the best advice, I'll really need to know what type of frags you're wanting to keep... such as softies, SPS, NPS, LPS, etc. The basics are like this: a short, wide tank... to allow for better light penetration, for easier access of specimens, and to be able to keep more coral in a smaller amount of space... after all, you cant really stack coral on top of each other...lol. Little to no live rock is used in coral propogation tanks. There is a bed/sheet of eggcrate in these type of tanks, to place the corals on. You can get away with not the strongest lighting for these tanks, as the light only has to penetrate about 6-8" of water, sometimes even less... as the tank itself is usually no deeper than 12". Power heads in the tank are a must, for water flow. Depending upon the corals you keep, and if you feed them, you might need heftier filtration than if you don't.
A UV light probably would work well in this type of tank if you can, but however UV lights are a topic of discussion, and I've never had experiences with them, so it would be nice if someone that has would comment and discuss.
A good idea that you could easily do would be to set up a refugium or algae scrubber. Both are effective natural filtration. Heck, if you don't worry about the aesthetics of it, you could create some sorta thing underneath the eggcrate and corals.
However, I would like to say one final thing that has come across my mind while reading this that I failed to mention in the beginning...
Fragging coral tends to be difficult on the whole colony of coral, both the mother colony and all the lil frags that came off of it. Taking the frags, while already stressed, out of the water and into an entirely new setup just adds to the stress of the specimens. If you're not going to be fraggin large amounts all the time, you should consider just an eggcrate rack attached to the side of the tank. It reduces stress on the frags and you don't have to create an enitrely new tank (which is fun..but..). For fragging medium amounts, you could also consider some kind of system in your sump if you have room for it in there.
BTW, what type of system of dt do you have? We all would love to see it. Please post pics!
Welcome once again!
