First Post - Basic Questions

Hey, everyone. I have been reading here for two months, and have learned a lot.
I'm setting up a 180gallon FOWLR tank. Being extremely unmechanical, I have found a LFS to help me with set-up and initial maintenance.
Two questions, to start:
(1) I realize I am going to be paying more for my pumps, skimmer, LR, etc from my LFS. Totally willing to do that, if he comes through and does what he says he will to keep my tank healthy. What would you guys consider an extreme mark-up? I certainly am not going to nickel and dime the guy - he has to make a living, too. Just don't want to get ripped off in the process.
(2) My LFS guy says he is "not a big fan" of live sand. He wants to start of with 1" of argonite and lots of live rock. OK? Or should I fight for live sand? I'm not doing corals, at least not until I figure all this out and can be sure I'm not killing things. However, I may want to upgrade in the future.
Thanks!
Kris

When he starts giving you prices for your equipment, post them and we can help you from there!
As far as the live sand, it is not as important as live rock. Being that you are not doing corals right now, I would probably just do a small layer of aragonite also.

I'd HIGHLY recommend buying online. With your size tank, you'll easily spend $200 to $300 more on equiptment going through a LFS. At least compare prices. And I agree, you don't need LS. Its really about what you want and go for it :joy:

There's nothing wrong with going with Arogonite sand at all. You can always "seed" the sand bed with about a cup of Live Sand to you existing sandbed.

I love live sand!!! it reminds me of Florida! where by the way i found the prettiest red sponge just flying on the beach.... poachers
if i would have had a tank there i would have brought it home... well if the rangers didnt catch me first.
