First SPS coral?

I'm thinking about switching from mostly softies and some LPS to SPS and LPS. What is a good SPS coral for starters? I have a 54g corner with a 400w 6500k MH and 2 55w actinic PC, bakpak skimmer and filstar filter.

I agree with Roland.
Easy to keep small polyped scleractinians include Hydnophora, Montipora, Anacropora (if you come across some, please email me where you got it from- Leathercoral85ga@aol.com), Pavana, and Seriatopora.
I would first start off with some captive raised Hydnophora, then move on to Montipora and then Pavana. If those are thriving (not just surviving, but they're showing good polyp extention, growth and coloration), then you may want to try Seriatopora hystrix and possibly Anacropora. Once you've good success with those, then you may want to move into the Acroporids. As Roland said, the A. yongei would be a great choice. They're fast growers and have great electric green coloration. Pocillopora may also be a good choice.

Now it's a matter of where to get them for a fairly good price. The lfs here are expensive when it comes to sps corals. Thanks for your help.

Try finding someone in the area with tank raised
corals, rather than wild caught corals. Captive raised corals grow quicker and are much more adapted to life in the aquarium, unlike wild corals (which often seem to always come down with rapid tissue necrosis within the first year).

Try a reef club and trade some stuff or buy if their is one in your area. Or maybe trade in some softies at the LFS.
I just traded a cady cane and got 5 frags of SPS tonight from a freind at work.  :D
I will post some pics in a day or two.

I agree! The reefclub PSAS in your area, Y2SAYS. It would be a great place to go. Zack S. also attends that club.
