Went and bought a couple zoas today to start and test the waters. After the big buy 30 dollars on 3 you all were chiming in about dipping. Well stopped and bought a dip and was wondering if this was all i needed or did I miss something. I bought Coral Rx dip filled a tub with display tank water = 1 gallon addded four caps waited 8 minutes with corals in. Took corals out put in fresh tank water in another dish then into the tank. Is this good or am I missing something.

No I did not look for pest. I had the idea that the dip was to kill the pest no worries. So do I need to go get a magnifying glass and search the piece before putting in tank.

Yes, for the zoa pests you should remove them by hand. The dip may just irritate them enough that they come out of hiding. But it will do nothing to the eggs, so you need to take something like a tooth brush to them.
Most of the coral pests that I worry about are species specific and can become plague like doing mass damage. So for example if you Google "Acropora coral pest" you can learn what to look for and how to treat the corals.

thank you and I suck. Hopefully no damage has been done. Should I pull them out of the tank and do it all over. Thanks for the eye opening help.

I would set up a QT tank for all new additions.
But it sounds like this is the only coral in the tank and if so, I would just look up zoa pests and check the coral over now and after dark.

Ok will do. did not know to use qt tank for corals. So for next time dip add to qt tank watch then add to display. right. figured dip then add. qt tank for fish only. Thank you for the help.

Ok, this is going to sound hypocritical and stupid.
So what I say is "Put all new additions in to QT"...... But, what I do is put snails strait in the DT.
Do as I say not as I do.... :ideclare: So it really comes down to how safe you want to be and what might worry you.

last question I hope. When you use copper in your qt tank to treat fish will it kill your corals later. Heard copper = dead
With a qt tank I have hang on with bio wheel. When it comes to medicating take out carbon what about bio wheel.
Wont copper get in biowheel. I set up a permanent qt tank

Some folks set up 2 QT tanks. One for fish... That way it can be treated with copper. And one for corals, that will never have copper ( this one can be used for inverts too).
I am looking at setting up a second QT for corals. I think I have those AEFW that GeoJ was talking about. I have some tissue recession on a couple of SPS and I think I may need to remove all of them and treat in QT and let the DT go without and Acros for some time. Not happy about it but when you spend some decent $$ on corals you want to protect them from pests. HTH's

You all like spending my money. Thank you for the advice makes sense now to me more. Looks like I have to save a little money now instead of taking a chance and spending more in the end.

You can get a good deal on craigs list for another tank. Once you get it clean it good with bleach and rinse it several times. Good to go!
Of coarse you will need to cycle it.
I like my little coral QT, so full of life and I have found several issues and treated accordingly. Nuthin to it.

Kiefers- What are your thoughts about keeping a small fish in a coral QT tank?? I was thinking about adding a small fish to be able to keep the cycle going. I mean that once the tank cycles and if you just have corals in it... Will there be enough waste keep the cycle going?? OR is that done by feeding the corals??
You just perked my mind by saying the your little coral Qt is so full of life.

I will try to answer this from what I have read. Ghost feeding will keep your tank on the right track and keep the cycle going.

First not all copper is the same, and the biowheel will likely be a prob.
I use Cupramine, and as long as I emptied the QT tank and rinsed it out there was no problem with restarting it and adding corals. If you use sand or LR in your QT that may change things. I
