im looking to set up a small tank for my dorm room next year. i will probably have a 6 or 10 gallon tank. i will put some LR in and some LS. i was wondering about any fish suggestions, because i know there is not many you can put in a tank this small. i will use water, LR and LS out of my already established tank. i was thinking of starting out with a bicolor blennie, any other ideas?

Personally I would stay away from damsels, even for the cycle.A tank that small will only be able to support one or two fish max,so why put a fish in there that will not be permanent. Many people have cycled tanks with clown fish. And they(clowns) seem most popular in micro tanks. I would probably setup, and cycle with a maroon,or a pair of percs. Then just leave them in as the perminent residents.

what about a clown and a pseudochromis? maybe a six line wrasse and a clown. i say if you have a 10 you could have 2 fish. jawfish are cool too. just get something small and that you like. later, bo

In a 10 I would go with a pair of Peculas as they are interesting to watch, colorful and in their own tank move around a bit top and bottom. Altho they are used for cycling they are not the best choice for that purpose, but I have used them before in that regard with no problems. If you went that way make sure you use some good product to help the cycle along don't just go water and fish. I have used the product cycle before and also a powder called Biozyme by Aquarium Products co.

i dont think there is going to be any cycle. im oging to use some substrate out of my established aquarium, as well as water, and maybe a little LR, so if there is any cycle, it should be minimal. i think im gonna get a bicolor blennie, then maybe a goby or something, and maybe a small swimming fish. i know its alot for a 6 gallon, if thats what i get, but do you think theyd be ok?

With rock and sand, your six gallon will probably only have four gallons of water in it.So three fish is really, really pushing it. I thought we were talking about a ten.A six gallon will hold more like ONE fish.Any more will really be asking for nasty, and quick water quality changes. I mean quick,A tank that small can go from fine to deadly in a couple of hours.Think about it,You have three fish swimming around in four gallons of water, yand they all do thier thing at the same time......Guess what,in a couple days they are swimming in sewer water.....

i think i am going too. ill probably get a filter that is really overkill too. thank you for the help, ill look into a neon goby. probably end up with one of those, and a bicolor blenny and maybe a yellow tail damsel or something little like that.

If you choose to go with 6 gallon, i have a friend that keeps a electric blue damsel and a green damsel that get along fine. He also has about 6 hermits and a cc star. Hope this helps.
Peace

Although the 10 is only a couple gallons bigger,I think it would make a BIG difference.I think the 10 will work.Just have to keep a real close eye on those test results, and test like every other day.

Maybe you should go with an eclipse twelve, i dont know what your finances look like, but they run about 100 bucks, but come with an acrylic tank, filtration, good lights, a canopy and a neato bejeato shape. I personally like em and find my mini reef to be more pleasing than my larger tank. All youll need is a heater and you're set. Good Times.

you said all i had to add was a heater to the eclipse 12 and i had a minireef? are the stock lights strong enough? cause if so, thats my new tank.
