What kind of fish would you recommend for a freshwater 30 gal hex? I want some with a lot of color (maybe a school)??? I currently have plants in there.

cichlids can be colorful, they are agressive though and some get pretty big so researh the fish before you get it as far as how big it gets.
dont get convicts unless you want a ton of fish, they multiply very quickly and very often.
if you want a community tank there are tons to choose from. the favorite fish i had was an elephant nose. he was sooo cool.
you could put quite a few neon tetras in there too they stay small its been a long time, but i dont think they get bigger than an inch. they are colorful too
there are alot of choices you could even go with angel fish.
good luck! freshwater is fun too :)

Hey,
I would probably stay away from the cichlids because they tend to rearrange rock and gravel and may uproot your plants. I like the idea of neons or their cousins the cardinal fish. I once saw a hex tank with mirrors on the back three sides, black gravel, blue actinic lighting and a school of about 24 neons that was incredible to see. (He had a couple albino cats too.) It put some sw tanks to shame.

yes the cichlids will definatly uproot and eat your plants. they even eat the artificial ones

that setup dan mentioned sounds really nice. wonder if my husband would let me set up another tank
dan, was that hex planted also?

Hey,
No. No plants. He had buried some bubble wands along the back three sides in front of the mirrors so there was a curtain of bubbles going up the back. Only other decoration was a large piece of drift wood.

Well - I picked out several different cichlids. I don't remember all the names though.:notsure: one gourami, one that looks like a beta but it's a cichlid (maybe a barb?) a little one that supposed to get some color like a rainbow trout and then I got an angel but it didnt' make it. Oh and one more male fish with a lot of orange - maybe it's the barb. I need to do some research on the names. Sorry! Any other suggestions of fish to add???

Hey,
Boy, you got a variety of fish. FW is a bit different that SW in that they come from different water conditions. (Salt water all basically come from the same conditions, the oceans and seas.) FW come from lakes, rivers, rice paddies ect. and all can't survive in the same tank for long. Some need a high ph, some a low ph. You should find a knowledgable fw person to help you pick fish that come from the same geographic reagion.
One of your fish sounds like a Zebra Danio. (The one that's supposed to look like a trout.) The orange one is probably a Molly of some sort, maybe a sword tail. (Females don't have the sword.
)
Anyway, you also have to know which fish do better in schools, pairs, or alone. A lot of swf people poo-poo fw, but there is still a lot to know to keep them alive and happy.

Hi Dan - Well I did my research and luckily it seems that my selection is not too varied afterall. I have one rosy barb, one dwarf gourami, a danio and a blue paradise.
You're right though - some of them are a schooling fish so I will need to add accordingly.
I was surprised to see that the paradise is considered a semi aggressive fish - mine is extremely mellow!
Anyway, thanks for the advice. I will be researching before I buy from now on.
I would still like to add some more color to this deal, if you have any suggestions! Maybe those neons?? Thanks!! :)

Hey,
Kinda depends on how many fish you'll have after getting your schools together. I've found neons a little touchy. Cardinals are a little more hardy in my opinion but you'll need a dozen or so. That might be a bit much unless you've got some good filtration. (Not an UGF!) The dwarf gourami you mentioned is colorful. (At least the males are.) If I remember from my fw days you can have a male and 2 females in the same tank.
If you just want a couple colorful fish, fancy guppies come in all kinds of wonderful colors and they are peaceful.
I think your Barb is concidered aggressive by fw standards also. Not as bad as oscars and the like, but a fin nipper.

Thanks! Now a silly question - do schooling fish like to school with their own kind or will they school with other fish that are schoolers? Make sense!??

Hey,
Mine always schooled as a species. I had a school of Cardinals and a school of White Clouds. Both tetra's, but they kept to themselves. Again, ask your lfs person because certain fish like the lower 1/3 of the tank, some the upper 1/3 and some go all over. You would probably want schools that didn't necessarily stay at the same level all the time.
Again, if I remember correctly, Cardinals and Neons will school together since they are so alike.

I had a 15g hex fw years ago. And as usual plants were the only filtration, no water changes, small light, and usually near a window. started with 6 anglefish. Four survived for bout 4 years.
Just a suggestion. The angle fish were tall and seemed to fit that format good.

i like angelfish in a hex too. I like how they look. They can get large! Ive kept several varities of FW angels for over 15 yrs. I have four in a 75 Gallon now.
Something to think about with angels, is the need to pick the ones you want and add them all at the same time to avoid fighting. If you add more later, they will fight..and pick each others lips off.
Heres a pic of three of them and two tin foil barbs
