I'm a little confused: the only thing getting copper are fish, right?
There is a school of thought that says ich lives in a dormant state forever, just waiting for a weak fish. Most sources will tell you, though, that once a tank has gone fishless for at least 4 weeks, ich will be gone. That has been my experience. If it does not have a fish host, the stuff dies and the life-cycle ends.
BTW, I strongly suggest SeaChem Cupramine copper and a SeaChem copper test kit.

Mr. T you scared me for a moment with that first statement About dormant ick
Yeah, Joe, I re-read it and sounds like I could be in the group that believes this. I'm not; but some folks, who know their stuff, believe it. IMO, if you don't have ich, and you are religious about QT (I use copper and a de-wormer in QT); you should never see ich in your DT, EVER.
