i will be going to be puting 500 lb lr in this sys . my question is would you use a wet /dry with skimmer ? or just sump

I would only use a sump. You should make your own sump out of an aquarium. Make three chambers all with dividers one higher than the other so they dump into one another. The first one should be where your water comes in from the tank. I would put some socks on your dumps to filter out particles. The second would be almost like a refugum. put a deep sand bed and some live rock. the third chamber would house your protein skimmer and return pumps. This is what I have and has been very successful in keeping a healthy reef. Also with very little maintanance. Good luck!
