fish only filtration

What kind of filtration is needed to start a fish only tank? I'm assuming a protein skimmer and power heads at a minimum. Is live rock, wet/dry, carbon filter also necessary?

You could run a tank with just power heads, live rock and a skimmer. I do. I had a wet/dry previously but it was just a big nitrate factory for me.

For a fish only tank, you should have something to provide MECHANICAL filteration. This can be a small simple hang on the back filter. It really depends on how large the tank is,and how many, and what kind of fish you want.Agressive fish like triggers or puffers are very messy eaters,so more filteration is needed with them as opposed to community fish...

Oops, sorry... I have the CPR BakPak 2 and a Whisper hang on for mechanical filtration and surface agitation. And a cleanup crew for the detritus on the bottom.
My bad.
