in saltwater the live rock and sand is your main filter I wouldnt go without it
bacteria needs surface area to grow
a fuge full of live rock is how I would do it if I wanted an open looking tank

This tank is in our livingroom so no fuge going to be there. I am pretty finiky about keeping things neat looking.
The livesand and 2 med size live rock in each corner is what I had planned for so there is lots of swimming room.
The fish would be my main focal point.

A hangon the back skimmer and filter modded into a fuge would serve this type of tank well.

Nope no fuge, this tank is in our living room and I am a neat freak so like things clean and neat. I did have this tank going as a saltwater tank about 2 years ago using a HOB filter and all worked well.
The tank is at the moment my Discus tank and I just sold everything I had in my 10 gal as I was getting real bored with it. I kept a few corals that I just could not part with and put them into my 1 gal pico. I just love this tank so much.
But I sure miss the saltwater fish and would only do a fish only tank as I like to watch the fish swim and love colorful fish. That is whay I am doing some homework before I do anything.
Here is amy littel one gal pico.

what kind of filter?filter floss or anything like that even sponge filters colonize bacteria with. something like that and a inch or so of sand you will be able to handle some fish just not a huge bioload. I have a mechanical filter with 2 little pads in my Qt it handles 3-4 small fish ok

I would deff. put sand and a good amount of live rock in your tank. Some fish like to have hiding spots and might not be happy if they didn't.

My 220 fish only is a true fish only, not a bit of live rock. I use lace rock, a decent amount of bio balls (not too many), and a good skimmer, and all is well.

I would like to bring this posting back up for some more questions.
As I have already said I am "thinking" about a fish only tank.
What kinds of fish would do well in a tank like this with a few plants only, no live rock??
There would never be any corals in this tank.
I am wanting to know if it is possible to have a nice display tank with just fish being the main focus in this tank, lots of movement and color too.
