I am new to the hobby. I have a 75 gallon with 100 lbs live rock, 40 lbs live sand, and JBJ lighting with 4 high output flourescent bulbs (2 white, 2 actinic). My question, which to get first---fish or mushrooms?

I am assuming your tank has cycled already. It wouldn't hurt to put the mushrooms first but, I have added mushrooms to my already estabished tank (including fish) and I didn't have any picking going on. I think it's up to you. Mushrooms are cool. I love mine. Be sure to put them close to the light, since I moved mine, they have doubled in size. Have fun.

Yes, tank has cycled and the clean-up crew is hard at work. I am ready to get some neat stuff in the tank----slowly, of course.

I still get excited when it is alright to add something new. I just added 2 corals and a hippo tang. I am in Heavan. its BRAG CITY. LOL!!! Slowly is most definately the way to go. It does suck though that noone gets to see my tang in the nice tank (he is in the QT) until we are sure he is ick free. Do you have a QT?

No, I do not have a QT. I know i should, and I think I will sometime later, but right now I have all I can do ($$$$$) getting the tank started. How many mushrooms would be good to start a 75-gallon with?

That question is better answered by a more experienced person on the board. Myself, I just have a small piece with about 6 mushrooms. I wanted to start small to see how I did. I now have several corals and they are all beautiful and doing great. You don't really need a QT until you start adding fish anyway. I didn't have one at first either but after loosing about 6 fish to ich I decided to invest in an eclips. It works great and no more worries about ich outbreaks from new fish. Slow and steady wins the race. Just take it slow and you will do great.

depending on the corals you want and the fish you want. Most reef fish don't pick at the corals. If you have a plan you can add the small er fish now so it helps with cycling your tank. Your tank continues to grow bacteria continues to cycle a fish helps with adding ammo. to your tank. You feed the feed and the fish creates waste that the corals and clean up crew feed on. IME having a few fish is good for your tank. You need to add fish slowely anyway not at once. Decide what you are keeping and you can add small ones. Most reefsafe fish don't pick at shrooms anyway unless your going for angels.
